C'est aux portes du Sahara dans le sud de la Tunisie que nous mène notre escapade. A Matmata, notre guide nous conseillera de ne pas nous écarter: des chien errants roderaient dans le village. A la vue du nombre d'enfants jouant dans les rues, je comprends que notre guide préfère la piscine de l'hotel à une balade. Inch'Allah, nous partons seul dans ces rues pour découvrir l'autenticité des lieux.
La maison troglodyte est une habitation creusée dans la falaise ou dans le sol. Un tunnel d’entrée mène à la cour. Cuisine, chambres, grenier et bergerie s'articulent en pièces annexes à la cour centrale. De grande taille et ensoleillée, c'est la pièce de cœur des habitants. Sous terre, ces habitations conservent une température stable toute l’année, n’accusant pas les fortes chaleurs pendant l’été. Aujourd'hui délaissées, les troglodytes s'abandonnent pour des maisons modernes confortables et climatisées. On compte un grand nombre de maisons troglodytiques encore habitées à Matmata.

Villages ou hameaux, les ksour s'élèvent de pierres et de terres. De nombreux greniers à grains conservent les denrées alimentaires des villageois. Des murs d'enceintes solides repoussent les assauts des tribus nomades. Aujourd’hui, certains de ces villages berbères sont des destinations touristiques. L’un des plus pittoresque, Ksar Hadada, conserve des souvenirs du passage de l’équipe de tournage de Star Wars.
